Learn The Basics
There are many concepts in art but the basic and most helpful concepts for beginners are:
Use a reference. Whether is using tracing paper or if you are painting digitally adding your reference to the side or as a layer under your drawing layer is vital. This will allow you to draw what is and not what you think it is. Take a close look at the lines, are they vertical or at an angle. Compare the angels and size and proportion of your drawing versus that of your reference.
Start your sketch by drawing the basic shapes.
Determine where is the light source in your drawing
Build up your drawing by adding more detail; adding contrast by highlight the lights and darkening the shadows
Last but not least of the 5 tips and practical advice to improve your drawing skills
Enjoy it!
This is the most important advice out of the 5 tips and practical advice to improve your drawing skills I can give you. Why? Simply, because you will need lot of practice to improve your skills; there is no way around it. We are fortunate to live at a period in time where there are so many resources available to us. Both paid and free. Watch tutorials, practice, challenge yourself to draw new things. Celebrate your progress, be proud of the small and big lessons. Draw, sketch, collect references, do something every day to improve your skill. One of my favorite mind hacks is looking at the highlights and shadows all around us. Look at how bright some areas are, almost white, even though the color of the subject is not white at all; same thing with the shadows.
Be proud of your drawing, print it, frame it. Make a special keepsake for yourself or your loved ones.
