Travel through Alaska one watercolor painting at a time with this relaxing art series inspired by its wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.

There’s something about Alaska that feels almost unreal.

Maybe it’s the endless mountains disappearing into the clouds. Maybe it’s the ancient glaciers cracking into the ocean. Or maybe it’s the incredible wildlife somehow thriving in landscapes that feel both beautiful and unforgiving at the same time.

This watercolor wildlife series began as a simple idea: paint cute Alaska animals.

But somewhere between painting puffins, grizzly bears, seals, whales, and mountain landscapes, it slowly turned into something more—a painted journey across Alaska itself.

Each watercolor became its own little adventure.

Some paintings focused on tiny survivors like the pika and Arctic fox, small animals somehow thriving beneath massive mountain ranges and endless snow. Others captured pure energy and movement, like the orca bursting from the Pacific Ocean or the bald eagle soaring with its salmon catch.

And then there were the quieter moments.

A baby seal resting on drifting ice beneath ancient glaciers. A peaceful moose standing near a calm lake surrounded by wildflowers and distant mountains. A sea otter floating effortlessly through icy water like the world’s fluffiest little tourist.

The more I painted, the more I realized Alaska is a place built on contrasts.

Softness and strength. Stillness and power. Tiny creatures surviving beside landscapes so vast they’re almost impossible to comprehend.

Even the environments themselves tell stories.

Kenai Fjords National Park glaciers, some formed over 23,000 years ago, slowly shifting and melting into the ocean. Denali towering above the clouds at 20,310 feet, so tall its peak is often hidden from view. The Pacific Ocean stretching endlessly south toward Antarctica.

And somehow, in the middle of all that scale and wilderness, there’s still room for adorable puffins carrying tiny fish, curious foxes with fluffy winter coats, and playful orcas launching themselves into the air for what seems like pure joy.

That contrast is what inspired this entire series.

🎨 The Watercolor Process

Every painting in this collection was created using layered watercolor techniques, slowly building contrast, texture, and movement over time.

Watercolor has a personality of its own.

Sometimes the paint behaves perfectly. At times it blooms unexpectedly into another area. Often the “happy accident” ends up becoming the best part of the piece.

That unpredictability became part of the journey.

Each narrated video walks through the full process step by step—from diluted base layers and soft landscapes to detailed fur, feathers, ocean textures, whiskers, reflections, and snowy effects.

This series reminded me that art and nature have something important in common: both reward patience.

Layer by layer, brushstroke by brushstroke, these paintings slowly transformed from blank paper into tiny windows into Alaska’s wilderness.

I’m not sure which part I loved more:
painting the animals,
learning about their environments,
or simply getting lost in the peaceful rhythm of watercolor itself.

After the deliveries, you admire the clean kitchen. Or at least the semi-clean kitchen. You feel exhausted, joyful and ready for your Hallmark contract.

Reality the Next Morning

However, real life returns the next morning. And surprisingly, it feels even better. You brew your favorite Colombian coffee and sit peacefully in the dining room. As if it is an everyday thing, you grab one gingerbread man cookie and take a bite. Mmm. He tastes amazing. You briefly believe calories vanish when cookies smile back at you.

At that moment, you accept an important truth. Real life is better than any holiday romcom. Yes, the movies repeat the same plot. Yes, you will still watch the new one. But real life has one thing those movies don’t. Your and your helper’s baking, your laughter and the memories make while spending time together. Your delicious somewhat spicy gingerbread man is a grounding force of this beautiful reality.

Life Is Good, Life Is Sweet

After all, holiday baking joy feels magical because it is real. Your festive cookies share love. Your sweet traditions matter. You bake your own delicious gingerbread man cookies, and each batch brings a moment of happiness. And happiness tastes even better with coffee and your helpers by your side.

So keep baking; and most importantly, keep sharing. Keep believing gingerbread calories don’t count. Life is good. Life is sweet. And your kitchen is the a Hallmark set, but better because it is real.

Gingerbread Man Cookie dough Recipe

Ingredients

28 oz Bread Flour
¼ teaspoon Baking Powder
¾ tsp Cinnamon
¼ teaspoon of ginger freshly grated or powder
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¾ teaspoon salt
7 oz butter at room melted
6 oz sugar
12 oz molasses
1 Large egg
Any hard candy decorations you can find.

Instructions

In a bowl, add the flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Set aside
Whisk butter, sugar and molasses; then add the egg and mix until combined.
Add flour mixture and mix on medium/low until the dough takes shape.
Roll out the dough to 1/4″ thick. Tip, if you don’t have a rolling pin with spacer rings, you can use two chopsticks on either side of the dough to ensure the dough is evenly rolled out.
If you are not in a rush, freeze dough for 20 minutes. This will help the cookies keep their shape during baking.
Cut Gingerbread men with gingerbread cookie cutters, decorate them with the assorted hard candy, and bake them for 8-12 minutes in a pre-heated 350°F (175°C) oven.
